What is Disney Lorcana: A beginner's guide to the Disney TCG that's taking the world by storm

Disney Lorcana arte oficial del set Attack of the Vine con Sulley Mike y Boo

We’ve been getting the same message on social media for months: "are you going to carry Lorcana?". Well, it’s time to talk about it. Disney Lorcana is the Disney trading card game created by Ravensburger, and in just three years it has gone from a curious gamble to a phenomenon: more than 2.8 billion cards sold, 13 sets released, and over 3,000 unique cards. If you’re wondering what Disney Lorcana is, how to play it, and why everyone is talking about it, this guide is your starting point. And yes, we'll break the news early: Lorcana is coming to Collectowny.

What is Disney Lorcana and how to play

In Lorcana, you are an Illumineer, a type of wizard who summons alternative versions of Disney characters called glimmers: from classic Mickey to a surfing Stitch or a warrior Elsa. The game is a head-to-head match where the first person to collect 20 lore points wins, which are gained by sending your characters on quests. The beauty of it lies in the balance: every character you send on a quest remains exposed to being challenged by your opponent, so every turn you choose between accelerating your lore or slowing down theirs.

The game's resource is ink: each turn you can turn a card from your hand into ink to pay for the others. There are six ink colors (Amber, Amethyst, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, and Steel) and each deck combines two. It is a very elegant system, easy to learn in an afternoon and with much more substance than it appears.

Cards that are pure Disney

If Lorcana has exploded the way it has, it's not just because of the game: it’s because the cards are beautiful and Disney fans want them all. The latest set, Attack of the Vine! (on sale since July 24, 2026), is a good example: a Monsters, Inc. theme with a vine invasion, the debut of Turning Red with Meilin Lee in red panda mode, and the new duo cards featuring two characters on a single card.

As for products, the structure will sound familiar if you come from Pokémon: 12-card booster packs, boxes of 24 packs, preconstructed starter decks, and the Illumineer's Trove, which is the equivalent of an ETB with boosters, a storage box, and extras.

Mind the language: Lorcana is not in Spanish

This is the first thing you should know if you come from collecting in Spanish: Lorcana is published in English, French, and German, and for now, there is no Spanish edition. In Spain, it is played and collected mainly in English, which is also the edition with the most liquid market. It's not a big deal (the card text is simple), but it's worth knowing before you start. If Ravensburger ever announces a Spanish version, we will be the first to let you know.

What's next: Hyperia City and the D23 bombshells

The timing couldn't be better, because Ravensburger just brought out the big guns at the D23 in Anaheim (August 14th and 15th). The biggest announcements:

  • Hyperia City, set 14, arrives on October 23, 2026 (prerelease in stores on the 16th). It trades the nature theme for a big city inspired by the Hyperion studios where Mickey was born, debuts the ink drops mechanic, and marks the debut of Coco in the game, with Miguel, Héctor, and the song Un Poco Loco.
  • Official digital version in development for mobile and computer. This is the announcement that could multiply the player base.
  • Into the Inkdark (first quarter of 2027) debuts Collector Boosters with 12 premium foils and a new collector rarity: Illustrious cards, serialized and with only 23 copies printed of each. The first one revealed: Maleficent, Biding Her Time.
  • Additionally: Cosmic Quest in spring 2027 (space theme) and the Beauty and the Beast Curator's Collection this October for the film's 35th anniversary.

Before Hyperia City, there is another date: The Great Hunny Rescue, the Winnie the Pooh cooperative adventure, on October 3rd.

Our take at Collectowny

We had been mulling over Lorcana for a while and the data convinced us: 2.8 billion cards in three years, sets that sell out like Attack of the Vine!, and now a serialized rarity of 23 copies that is going to turn the collector market upside down. It’s one of the TCGs you ask for the most, and we believe the perfect entry point is right in front of us: Hyperia City in October. Our specific recommendation to start: a preconstructed deck to learn, plus an Illumineer's Trove from the set whose art you fall in love with, and from there, buy boosters wisely. And as we always say: whatever you pull, keep it protected from minute one.

Lorcana is coming to Collectowny

We are preparing for the arrival of Disney Lorcana to the store so that the section grows with high-quality sealed product, just like we did with Pokémon and One Piece.
